“Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.” The silence in the city of Menlo Park, New Jersey was so complete for a moment on the evening of December 31, 1879 that you could have heard a pin drop. Some 3,000 people had gathered to witness a phenomenon that would change the course of history more drastically than practically any other invention or event ever had. But the success achieved by Edison’s light bulb was attributable to inspiration, and above all hard work.

A telegraph operator, and son of a grain and timber merchant, Edison began his career at the age of 12, hawking newspapers, and by the age of 15 was publishing his own newspaper. Edison went on to develop more than 2,000 inventions and register more than 1,000 patents, including for the first functional typewriter and the first motion picture camera. The feat that so bowled over those in attendance on that December day in 1879 in Menlo Park came much later.

Amazingly, only a year elapsed between Edison’s first significant experiments and the unveiling of the incandescent light bulb, whose components were as simple as they were ingenious – namely a filament comprising a carbonized piece of cotton, a glass beaker, and electric current.

And just under two years later Edison added the legendary threaded socket, which allowed for universal use of his light bulb.

Edison was now world famous.
